Imperial Beach is a city in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 17,839 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by the San Diego Bay to the north and east, and by Orange County to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Imperial Beach were Spanish sailors in 1821 when they charted an area of which they thought may contain oil reserves., In 1864, Englishman John Jacob Astor built hisAstoria Hotel on Unincorporated Coast Guard land off Point Lobos Boulevard in what is now Marine Park. By 1870, most of present-day Imperial Beach had been developed as a result of waves of arrivals from Northern California during the Gold Rush era. In 1886 Captain John Sutter's party of 49 men sailed up the coast from Stockton onshore and founded Sutter's Fort on Isla de Santa Catalina (Island of Santa Catalina) about half way between Point Lobos Boulevard and Balboa Peninsula. They named their fort "San Francisco" after their capital city in England (then London). The town began as a small cluster of tents near Sutter's Fort but soon became a booming community with restaurants, saloons and stores. Sutter's Fort served as an important stop for ships sailing up or down San Diego Bay before reaching San Francisco and later becoming known for its pickled vegetables that were sold at Market Square near downtown San Francisco until 1915. The town grew rapidly through annexation by other towns until it had over 100 houses and businesses by 1903 when it was split into two parts: North Side (later Elmira) and South Side (later Imperial). North Side became part of Chula Vista while South Side became part of Otay Mesa.. It wasn't until 1916 that buildings numbered more than 100 were erected within what are today Federal Way Drive & State Street NW..On July 15th 1916 Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes addressed a meeting at Masonic Temple No 4B located adjacent to First National Bank Building on Broadway where he announced that jurisdiction over unincorporated areas lying seaward extending inland 5 miles situated along portions now bounded by Broadway & I-5 was granted to Otay Mesa Association Incorporation under terms set forth in Resolution No 7951 adopted August 14th 1916 with $1 per acre levied thereon
