This effort has included new development along both its waterfront and inland areas; increased public access to beachfront amenities; and increasing involvement from local businesses in local government decisions. These efforts have helped revive the city’s economy and provide opportunities for residents to enjoy more active lifestyles outside of their homes while still having access to essential services they need without leaving their neighborhoods
The first English settlement in Imperial Beach, California was founded in 1851 by Captain John A. Sloat and his brother Commodore George Sloat. The name of the town was changed to San Diego in 1857, and it became a U.S. Naval Base from 1907-1915. During World War II, the naval base was home to USS "San Diego" (CA-8) and USS "Tulip" (AS-3). In 1964, the Naval Station moved from its original location at Point Loma to its present site on North Harbor Drive on the edge of Town Park.
