On December 8th 1942 local residents woke up to find Japan had surrendered at Pearl Harbor and all military forces had evacuated; no civilian infrastructure remained standing apart from abandoned homes or stores ashore which quickly provided safe havens for Japanese troops awaiting evacuation orders inland. The post-war era saw an increase in maritime activity with Dockworkers Union Local No 95 organizing protests against discriminatory practices during 1949-1952 following strikes at six major shipyards including Wilmington Navy Yard where black workers outnumbered white employees by almost 50%.
