On February 17th he sent a small party ashore to explore some points east of Point Conchita Harbor before continuing his voyage northwards along present day US coastlines into British Columbia where he arrived on March 4th). Imperial Beach experienced rapid growth following World War II when many American servicemen stationed here returned home after serving in our military campaigns abroad including World War II Victory Medal recipient General James MacArthur who later became governor of California . There are now only a few remaining businesses from those years such as: Argyle Motels Inc., Black & Decker Incorporated, Duncan Hines Restaurants Incorporated, Applebee’s Restaurant Corporation, Akashiwa Fisheries Corporation Limited) which remain primarily residential areas today while most other businesses have closed or been converted into condos or rental units As one side effect of increased defense spending by our country since World War II there has also been an increase in crime rates throughout Southern California especially near military installation areas although authorities have made PROGRESS against this problem over the last several decades with more arrests being made then solved per 100K Crime Index compared to prewar levels . The history of Imperial Beach is a long and complicated one. It began as an agricultural community in the 1870s, when Spanish settlers arrived in California. The town was founded on the site of what is now known as Point Loma, a point on San Diego Bay that attracted sea captains and other maritime industry leaders. In 1875, the U.S. government sold Rancho Encinal to James Irvine, who established the nearby town of Imperial Beach as a commercial center for the wealthy Orange County farmers who had come to California to make their fortunes in wine and cattle ranching. The town grew rapidly, reaching its peak population of around 30,000 in 1910. However, during World War I Imperial Beach became known for its munitions production and military activity. In 1960, Imperial Beach was acquired by then-Governor Ronald Reagan from his father; it became part of his adopted home state of California. In 1880, a lighthouse called La Jolla Point Lighthouse was built at what is now Point Conception on Marine Drive adjacent to present-day North Shore Boulevard. It served as an aid to navigation until 1912 when a new lighthouse was built at what is now Yacht Harbor Pier and served as the primary navigational light for almost fifty years before being replaced by a radar beacon in 1975. A small town developed around this lighthouse due to its proximity to important commercial shipping lanes and its ability to provide goods and passengers with access to inland markets through nearby towns like Pasadena and Monterrey Springs. In 1916 Congress passed legislation creating San Diego County which included much of today's Imperial beach peninsula including most of what are now Imperial Beach streets and shorelines - as well as parts of Point Conception and La Jolla Cove (now Buena Park). At that time there were only 2 thousand people living in San Diego County while over 20 thousand people lived in Torrance county which made up much of southern California at that time.
