Kerman is a small city in the Central Valley of California, located about 20 miles east of Fresno and 10 miles west of Bakersfield. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The town was named for George Kerman, an early settler. When gold was discovered in 1848, many men from nearby Tulare City came to claim their share of the wealth. One resident, Wm. H. Deuel (1812-1892), donated land to the town on which it now stands. The first post office was opened in 1851 and the name changed to Kerman in 1857 because of its location close to both Fresno and Bakersfield. The first store was built on what is now Main Street in 1876 and soon afterwards a hotel followed suit. By 1907, there were six stores and one restaurant in Kerman Village with a population of about 150 people. In 1916, Kerman became part of Doña Ana County when it was organized from parts of Placer County and El Centro County. At that time it had a population of just over 5500 people and consisted mostly of Native American farmers who used Indian Reservations near Redding as their farm base A new courthouse/ jail complex was completed in 1951-1952 by local contractor Waddell & Crippen Incorporated under contract with the California State Prison System In 1957-1960 two more shopping malls were constructed adjacent to downtown: One on First Street between Euclid Avenue and Gage Boulevard (now Orange Avenue)and another across First Street from Third Street between Union Pacific Railroad tracks (now Interstate 5). These developments increased the numberof residents living within walking distance or bike ride away from downtown or jobs along I-5 . Downtown business district activity decreased during this period as new housing began being built outside limits designated for retail development . In 1966-1968 four blocks long Southeast corner Main Street & Thirteenth Avenue SW developed into what is today known as Old Town Square which included several restaurants (Eve's Place Restaurant, Luby's Cafeteria, Texaco Supermarket), several banks (First National Bank & Trust Company - now Wells Fargo) , three movie theaters including one newly constructed by Walt Disney World – Disneyland –expanded upon plans by developers Harry Carney Sr., Harry Carney Jr., Don Freeman
