Laguna Niguel is located on both sides of Interstate 5 and has a total area of 222 square miles (596 square kilometers). Despite being punished by General Lopez Regalado with 10 years imprisonment and $10 million in damages ($ in current dollars), many families continued to live near Mission San José throughout the 1840s and 1850s because it could be reached only by boat or foot through rugged terrain that extended inland for miles. Throughout this time period there were also large-scale efforts to bring water control projects to Laguna Niguel through canals dug deep into the serpentine hillsides below Topanga Lake - one such project led to creation of Playas del Rey State Park today. During World War II, much effort went into developing bomber bases in nearby Menifee Valley which would be used for strategic bombing raids over Southern California; these raids resulted in some damage to local homes but no loss of life.
