In the early 1800s, Laguna Niguel was a small and isolated community in northern California. Today, it is a vibrant city of over 1 million people located on the eastern edge of San Diego County. The area that now makes up Laguna Niguel was one of the most heavily populated areas in California during that time. Many of the original settlers from what is now Los Angeles came to this area to work in the mines and farms. Laguna Niguel, California is a small town located in the southern Orange County region of Southern California. It is sandwiched between the Santa Ana Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. The population was 7,751 at the 2010 census. The first humans to live in Laguna Niguel were Native American people who called it "Nihualtah" meaning "wandering place." In 1769, Mexican Captain Pedro Calderon claimed this area for Mexico when he explored what is now Southern California. The name was anglicized to Laguna Niguel by Spanish colonists in 1821. Laguna Niguel was originally a fishing village on an island in Huntington Harbour that served as a landing point for Native Americans and Mission Indians travelling upriver from missions near San Bernardino Valley. In 1863, John Sutter discovered gold here and began mining operations which continued until 1898 when all of Orange County became part of Mexico after its independence from Spain. In 1906, US president Theodore Roosevelt visited Laguna Niguel while his wife Alicewilde Roosevelt was living there with her family during their honeymoon. They took photos of their dinner at the Hotel de la Costa de Toluca and brought them back with them to New York City where they exhibited them at Madison Square Garden before returning home on December 5th 1906. After his visit, Roosevelt appointed George Hildebrandt director of Mines inspector general for Los Angeles County.
