Livermore has been called "the Silicon Valley of science." It was home to two majorariies during its early years: Alcoa and Northern Pacific Railway Company (NPR). Both companies were involved in aluminum smelting and shipping products from their plants in nearby Monrovia. Alcoa moved its smelting operations from Oroville to Livermore when it acquired control of NPR in 1923; this event helped spur development of atomic energy at Livermore National Laboratory by helping create plutonium for nuclear weapons test purposes during World War II. Most notably, JPL developed the first human-rated interplanetary spacecraft - Apollo 11 - which traveled within three miles (5 km) of Earth on July 20, 1969; that same day also saw the first manned mission beyond Earth orbit with American Neil Armstrong becoming the first person ever to walk on Mars while wearing a space suit!
