Mill Valley, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 13,846 at the 2010 census. The Mill Valley area was once part of the Mayacaueca Mission and has been inhabited by the Ohlone people since 1679. It became a part of the Rancho San Rafael land grant given to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1835. The first mill built in Mill Valley was located on Menlo Avenue near what is now University Avenue. In 1854, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort in Mill Valley and began mining gold here. By 1870, mills had been built at Folsom and North Beach streets and about 20 families were living in Mill Valley. In 1881, after years of litigation with surrounding ranchos over water rights for their mines, Sutter sold his rights to the US Bureau of Mines to Lorenzo Snow for $10 million. This created much speculation as to who would build the first flour mill in America - it finally happened when George Eastman opened his Rochester Mills in 1888. The growth of agriculture (especially raising chickens) during World War II led to increased demand for flour products which led to more mills opening up around Mill Valley and throughout Northern California; these mills produced breads, pasta dishes, cigarettes and other items that helped support wartime production efforts. With ever-growing populations coming out of poverty during the Great Recession (millions became jobless), many small businesses closed or lost their jobs during this time period as well. However, many new businesses have started up recently based on innovation such as 5G mobile services and AI designed forthe agricultural sector; these businesses hope to benefit from continued growth within this increasingly competitive economy. Today Mill Valleys dependence on agriculture & manufacturing has begun to decline; however there are still several hundred thousand people working within various sectors including: information technology services/supporting big data analysis & machine learning; retail trade; transportation & warehousing; health care/social assistance; restaurant/bar industry

Mill Valley is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,500 at the time of the 2010 census. Mill Valley was established in 1887 by Ezra Cornell and his brothers, George and Franklin. The original millinery shop was built on the banks of the San Joaquin River. By 1893, mills had been constructed on both sides of the river, and production reached $2 million annually. In 1914, when World War I started, mills were turned into munitions plants to produce shells for war. After the war ended, milling slowed as new technologies replaced older ones such as water power and gas turbines. However, during the late 1990s Mill Valley experienced a resurgence with businesses starting up to promote tourism and economic development around its antique shops and landmark buildings. Today Mill Valley still has a strong traditional Americana culture that is popular among visitors to its restaurants and shops.
In 1847, John Sutter and his partners, Jedediah Smith and Solomon Gold Rush started the first organized town in what is now Mill Valley. The town was named for George Mills, one of the partners in the gold rush. The first post office opened in Mill Valley on July 1, 1848. The original building still stands today and is used as a community hall. The mill worked until c1900 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1872, a school was built and operated by the Presbyterian Missionary Society. A new mill was built in 1902 by J.P. Morgan & Company which continued to operate until 1977.
