However, during the later years of World War II Mill Valley lost muchof its prosperity as technology advanced and new factories were developed elsewhere in California such as Menlo Park or Palo Alto. Today Mill Valley retains a strong sense of community with continuing support for agriculture and industry; however, it has seen some recent development including several high-rise apartment buildings and a new shopping center called "The Gap".
The Mill Valley area has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for over five thousand years. They were a nomadic tribe that traveled in canoes and wagons. The first permanent inhabitants of the mill valley region were the Bayonets, who arrived in 1847. The Bayonets were a Native American tribe that lived on the San Francisco Peninsula. They were displaced by the arrival of Mexican settlers in 1853. The first mills in Mill Valley were built by Captain John Broughton and his brother-in-law, Colonel George Washington Goodwin, in 1857. The mills produced flour, cottonseed oil, paper, and other products. In 1865, General Edwin Grant occupied the peninsula and began to expel the indigenous people from California. The native people became known asthe Umpires or “pacifiers” due to their role in helping to suppress Indian uprisings during this time period. In 1870, a group of European immigrants led by Henry Ford came to Mill Valley and started a new industry called trucking. This new industry allowed farmers to transport goods more easily across country and madeMill Valley an important center for transportation during this time period. In 1928, Mayor William Daley announced that Mill Valley would be served by its own City Hall – which was constructed on land donated by Mr. Daley himself! The city hall was designed in classical Revival style and is one of only two such structures remaining from Mill VALley's original community culture (the other being adjacent to today's High School). In 1937, World War II began and Mill VALley saw heavy use as a military base for local soldiers stationed throughout Northern California! After the war ended, many jobs went away asmill production decreased because of competition from cheaper overseas sources. However, some businesses continued to operate until they closed during the late 1990s – including JBL Guitar & Amplifier Company (now owned by Vox), Golden State Pizza restaurant (now defunct), Blue Bottle Brewery (now defunct), Andes Coffee Roasters (currently open at UC Berkeley; previously closed at nearby Pacific Gas & Electric),[and] Blue Jay Cigars。[1]
