The area that would eventually become Mill Valley was a rural outpost on the outskirts of San Francisco, and its only source of defense was a small number of Shotguns and Revolvers used by the local farmers. The first gun to be protected in Mill Valley was an Old World flintlock pistol that belonged to John A. Woolley, who settled in the town in 1853. Gunowners were required to secure their firearms within 24 hours of owning them, and any weapons that were not secured were subject to seizure by government officials. In 1865, gun owner Captain Hiram Henshaw purchased a shotgun from Major General George W. Taylor at auction at Rancho Seco. This shotgun became known as the “Henshaw Shotgun” because it was the only one ever registered in Mill Valley with this name. In 1892, miller and farmer James Hargrave donated a rifle to Mill Valley for use as security against bandits during harvest time. The rifle is now displayed at the Arthur Ashe museum in San Francisco
