Mill Valley is a small town in Marin County, California, United States. It is located on the north shore of the San Francisco Bay. As of the 2010 census, Mill Valley had a population of 913. What we now callMill valley was then called Diamond Head because high bluffs surrounded it on three sides which gave rise to this name (the fourth side being given due east). Mill Valley was founded in 1850 by James W. Fuller and his wife Mary. The first mill was built on the Mill Creek west of the present-day town center, but it failed to produce enough flour to meet demand. In 1853, Fuller moved the mill to what is now the south side of Mill Valley proper. The new mill produced more flour than the original, and helped to spur growth in the town. By 1870, Mill Valley had a population of about 150 people and a few small businesses. However, economic troubles starting arising in 1873 caused many mills to close their doors throughout California due to low prices for flour brought on by large export markets overseas. But despite these difficulties, local residents kept up support for their town during hard times. In 1892, when Mill Valley became part of San Francisco County, it experienced its most difficult time yet as 102% of its citizens were transplants from other parts of California looking for a safe place to live after goldrush fever swept through Northern California during that decade.
