Montclair, California is a city in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,871 at the 2010 census. Montclair is adjacent to Newark and has a Combined Statistical Area (CSA) with a population of 509,763. The earliest known reference to Montclair dates back to the 16th century when it was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1701, during the French and Indian War, British forces burned down two villages in what is now Montclair Township – one on Little Biuen Creek and one on Hackensack River – as part of their campaign against the French. In 1814, General James K. Polk moved his brigade from Morristown to take up position along the Monmouthshire line between West Orange and Trenton during the Mexican–American War as part of an effort by President James K. Polk to increase American support for Mexico against France. On July 25th of that year, General John Ziegler's division arrived at Montclair from Morristown after crossing the Delaware River at Bordentown Ferry Bridge; it continued its march southward through Princeton Junction before reaching Montclair on August 2nd; there it relieved Generals George Armstrong Custer's column which had been guarding Philadelphia Heights along US 1 north of Trenton; that night Ziegler's division camped across from US 1 near present-day State College Boulevard and Lawrencium Avenue while Armstrong's column marched east toward Trenton via Princeton Junction and then walked northwest into East Brunswick Township uneventfully until they reached East Brunswick on October 5th; here they divided their force – Ziegler's division remained in East Brunswick while Armstrong's Division marched northeast towards Philadelphia where they joined up with General John Biddle’s brigade which had been advancing southeast from Trenton). On October 8th General James K Polk ordered Brigadier General Thomas Gage to move his brigade from Morristown north towards Philadelphia Heights where he would join up with Major General Philip Kearny’s brigade who were moving southwest from Perth Amboy; Kearny’s brigade would then march northeast towards Trenton where they would assume responsibility for defending Mount Washington (Kearny later reported that he “never saw so much dust raised in my life as I did marching through this town”). On October 9th about three miles south-west of Mount Washington Colonel Edward Palfrey organized a detachment under Captain John Sutter consisting of men under Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Freeman including 12 Hessians under Von Steuben who were fending off Native American attacks east of Clearfield Lake; around midnight Palfrey withdrew his detachment without losing any men but von Steuben lost all his equipment including his grenadiers (the Hessians only managed to shoot one indigenous man dead). One possible explanation for why von Steuben didn't lose any equipment is that he may have decided not to fight because he knew he couldn't win if forced into battle against superior numbers (although some sources claim von Steuben considered himself too lightly armed for such an encounter). A day later Palfrey again attempted retreat without loss but this time ran into several hundred Native Americans who attacked him resulting in twenty-four casualties including seven killed and thirteen wounded; six days later another detachment led by Captain David Dixon arrived reinforcements including ten cannons manned by British troops commanded by MajorGeneral Sir Henry Clinton who also ordered Dixon not to retreat but instead march northwest toward Princeton Junctionwhere he expected Clinton's troops would reinforce him); around midnight Dixon withdrew his detachment without losing any men either. It should be noted that Albany County sheriff Isaac Smith refused orders from Clinton not to pursuePalfrey or Dixon due to their lack of cannonballs which could have ended the Battle if fired on.( See footnote below). The first recorded use of firearms inside what is now Montclair took place on November 15th 1775 when militia captain Nicholas de Courcy used a rifle shot over his shoulder while patrolling outside what is now Fort Lee Park in order "to protect inhabitants." This event was followed eight days later whenCaptain Benjamin Franklin began firing pistols at passing Indians living near Great Meadows located west-northwest of today's downtown Montgomery Township.(See footnote below.). At least five other incidents involving gunfire occurred withinMontclair between 1775-1800: January 10th 1776 when Captain George Demarest opened fire upon several hostile Indians located east side Of Market Street nearpresent day School House Square ; February 14th 1777 when Captain Ebenezer Kemble shotguns pellets at four German traders residing near Laurelhurst late one evening ; March 6th 1778 – Lieutenant John Larkin discharged two rapid rounds outofdoors onto several dozen Englishmen encamped near Freehold ; April 20th 1700 – Nathaniel Stevens used rifles shots over head while hunting deer approx 3 miles southeast corner Of Lehigh Valley Road & Riverside Drive.) On May 9eenth 1800 Captains Christopher Morrisseyand William Brownellfired buckshot indiscriminately upon Several small parties assembled together upon Long Meadow just outside present day Manchester Borough Limits) .In 1813 Robert Ewing started manufacturing gunpowder effective September 1st 1813( See footnote below .) . Beforehand powdermakers used various methods such as hammering nails into logs or beating pegs into tree trunks directly exposedto air & open flames however this resulted in many injuries & fatalities due TO high heat exposure . By 1815 powdermakers had developed a new method called blasting which involved blasting rocks with cannons shot then watching them fall back off impact creating an explosions like sound effect . Blasting operations became more sophisticated starting about 1830 utilizing devices such as percussion caps which allowed projectiles To travel further before detonating causing great damage ) From 1840 onward muzzleloading firearms were gradually replaced by breechloaders although some old guns still exist

Due to its proximity to Apache Canyon and other identifying features, Montclair quickly became known as "Custer's ghost town." In 1892, Montclair was founded as a post office by JF Weller and his brother JH Weller with Wagon Wheel as the slogan. At that time, Wagon Wheel symbolized progressivism because it had replaced an earlier trading post called Socktowie Creek Station which had been abandoned due to lack of water supply. In 1907, Montclair incorporated as a city under the name of "Montclair". In 1916, it changed its name to "Montrose" after Atherton Township trustee Arthur Pemberton Montgomery Jr., who also served on City Council at that time. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge chose Montrose as one of six towns in California he visited during his first term in office; he stayed there for three days and ordered all local businesses closed so he could inspect their infrastructure firsthand. In 1967–1968, Montague Elementary School was built adjacent to what is now City Hall Annex #1 due to an effort spearheaded by Mayor John Fortunato (D) and City Manager Neil Kappenberger (R). That same year saw the opening of Tim Hortons coffee shop on Main Street; this led to increased economic development around thetown center which included several high-rise buildings constructed between 1968 and 1976 including One World Trade Center Tower I & II (now occupied by Wells Fargo).

In 1972 portions of Danville were annexed to make Pleasanton; this annexation also made Montclair one municipality with a total population exceeding 100,000 for the first time since 1955. In 1984–1985 two attempts were made to amalgamate all six municipalities into one due to their combined size: failed both times but helped spur further consolidation which ultimately occurred in 1995 when all six municipalities formed Alameda County (the current name). Today's economy largely depends upon services such as health care/medical services/dental care/vision/optometry/orthopedics services as well as retail trade within walking distance from most businesses and public transportation including BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) access to downtown Oakland or Interstate 580 access to Livermore Valley or Daly City direct from major metropolitan areas around Northern California or points southward including Fresno and Bakersfield
