Prior to European settlement, the area now known as Montclair was inhabited by the Ohlone people who lived near present-day Pleasanton and Dublintowns on opposite sides of Lake Alameda. On December 12, 1885, George H., Jr., one of nine children born to George H. Smith and Emma (née Bailey), two weeks after their parents arrived in Antioch from Emigration Plains Township in Manchester Township, Pennsylvania via covered wagon train following the American Civil War, founded what would soon be called "Montclair". By 1888 it had grown into a small town with a population of 100 residents; however it struggled during prohibition-era times with few opportunities for employment outside agriculture or family agriculture pursuits due to tight regulation from local liquor stores owners fearful that organized drinking would lead to social unrest among their customers/workers/ neighbors should they be forced out onto prohibition streets). After repeal of Prohibition in 1933+, Montclair continued growth during World War II with many businesses expanding into production for military materials such as ammunition and aircraft parts; post-war prosperity saw steady job growth until2001 when economic recession hit hardest followed by heroin addiction & crime which plagued the community throughout most of 2011

The City of Montclair was founded by James Fenton on December 1, 1851 as a result of an Act of Congress passed during the Mexican–American War. In 1868, the town became part of the newly created Contra Costa County when that location was split off from Alameda County. In 1892, downtown Montclair reached its current size with the opening of the new Central Avenue Bridge over I-580 which connected Oakland to Contra Costa County. On October 5th, 1974 at 10:00 PM local time (PDT), an earthquake struck Northridge fault line located in Napa Valley just south of Menlo Park killing three people and injuring more than 60 others including eight members of the United States Congress and many other high-ranking officials including President Richard Nixon himself who were visiting Northern California for his final campaign stop before leaving office that night. The quake had a magnitude 6.0 and generated very powerful shaking that could be felt up to 175 miles away; entire storefronts vibrated for several seconds before subsiding back to their original positions without causing any injuries or damage within blocks radius around downtown Montclair A $5 million study undertaken by Pacific Gas & Electric Company estimated that increased seismic activity resulting from both natural disasters such as earthquakes and climate change could cause economic losses totaling $100 billion by 2040 caused by things like loss of life due to falls or trips into watercourses during large quakes as well as lost production value due to displacement of jobs from urban areas
