Monterey is a city located in San Luis Obispo County, California, on the Monterey Peninsula. The population was 25,451 at the 2010 census. It is known for its wine and tourism industries. The first Europeans to visit Monterey were Missionaries Francisco Pico and José de Alvarado who founded the mission of Santa Cruz de la Costa in 1795. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and Monterey became part of Mexican territory as part of the State of California. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, American forces captured Monterey after a three-day siege. The town's strategic location on the peninsula allowed American forces to blockade Mexico City while they fought their war against Mexico. After Mexican independence was granted in 1848, America started to build fortifications along the coastlines of California and Baja California; these were called Presidio (meaning "headquarters") because commanders assigned to them reported to Generalísimo Juan Bautista Alvarado at presidio headquarters in Monterey Bay. One such fortification was Fort Point on an uninhabited cape near present day Moss Landing on San Nicolas Island which served as a military post until it was decommissioned in 1862 due to fears that hostile natives might attack it from within or without; this event is commemorated by an annual Fourth of July parade through Moss Landing and by keeping Fort Point open as a museum today. It took another decade for newPresidios to be built at Benicia (1859), Vallejo (1860), Yerba Buena (1862) and other locations throughout Californias interior regions including San Francisco Bay Area before Presidios could offer real defense against attacking Native Americans rather than just providing cover for troops manning existing artillery batteries ashore or coastal defenses inland from missions etc.; however even then Indian attacks continued unabated until about 1840 when most all major settlements had been taken over by white occupants who began clearcutting forests near mission sites for agricultural purposes primarily but not exclusively Ranchos en adelante Enterprise cattle ranches – thus beginning what would become known as Missions Policy 1). As late as 1875 there remained only one small outpost/residence still standing undeveloped at Rinconada Springs on Isla Del Rey – also known today as Rancho Pastaza – some 21 miles offshore off southernmost El Sobrante county where Operations Manager Lt Colonel John Capps resided with his wife Agnes Cline between 1865-70 while commanding 2nd Battalion Ulysses S Grant’s 3rd Infantry Regiment during The Great Race under Gen Ziegfeld’s management

Monterey is a city located in Monterey County, California. The population was 23,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monterey County and home to the renowned Monterey Peninsula National Monument. The name "Monterey" comes from Spanish meaning "Island of Palms." The peninsula has been inhabited by Native American people for more than 10,000 years and today's citizens are descendants of those ancestors. In 1821, Captain James Cook discovered what would become known as the Santa Cruz Islands while sailing along the Pacific coast of North America. He named these islands San Francisco de la Laguna and Santa Cruz del Norte after his ship reached them first. In 1846, Mexican soldiers sacked Fort Point on Cape Mendocino and thereby disrupted efforts by United States forces to add Mexico to the Union as a country. As a result of this event, many Americans chose to move westward in search of new opportunities in an era when land was abundant but cheap to purchase. Some began building permanent homes on lands that would ultimately form much of what is now Monterey County. On July 4th, 1849- four years after Commodore Perry's visit- President George Washington bestowed upon California its official statehood with plenary approval via proclamation (the only U.S. president to do so). At one time or another every major European force seeking influence in California had passed through or visited Monterey during its boom days: Spain (Mission San Francisco), Portugal (Ft Pico), England ( Custodial Island), France (Fort Royal), Mexicans (Mendoza Barranca), Aleutians (Kaktovik)…. During this period some 6500 men worked on 640 miles (1125 kilometers) of roadways; 5500 boats sailed daily carrying supplies; 4000 huts were built; nearly 5000 acres (.22 km²) were cultivated….. By 1850 most jobs had dried up due largely to overpopulation! In 1861–62 Commodore John D’Aguilar steamers stopped at anchor offPoint Conception about 12 miles from where current day Isla Mujeres lies between Yacht Harbor and Big Sur State Park; seamen ashore procured goods for ships moored offshore which then unloaded at anchorage for transportation back into town.– A landing party led by First Lieutenant Samuel Townsend landed two troops under Captain Wm Higginson onshore late night August 15th 1861.(Old Beach Head lighthouse site). Aftermath: several buildings on wharf burned down including Townsend's house which still stand today.(New Beach Head Lighthouse also burned.) Monterey started as a small adobe mission in 1846.
