A post office called "Naranjo" was established at this location in 1853, but no town developed around it until 1860 when Alexander McNaught built a sawmill on the south side of Mission Creek. In 1865, General Mariano Vallejo assigned Jens Jensen as supervisor of Contra Costa County over what is now Stanislaus County; Jensen quickly became one of the most successful farmers and entrepreneurs in that region. By 1870, he had constructed two gristmills and enlarged three others; his corn mills turned out more than 20 million bushels per year (a record at that time). With support from prominent citizens such as George Hearst and banker William Randolph Hearst Sr., Jensen built two factories: one for making flour and feed for local livestock and another for manufacturing novelties like fire starters and cigars. In 1872, he also opened a branch store in San Francisco to market his products there; today's Janesville Road commemorates his efforts here. Jensen Avenue running east-west through downtown Novato remembers him best: it begins with a street name derived from what he did not have – "Naranjo", meaning "the end". Novato is located in the North Bay region of San Francisco, and is part of the city's east side. The Novato Creek flows through town. On November 10, 1853, the first post office was established here with a name that was later changed to Novato. On May 8, 1867, the California Central Pacific Railroad reached Novato from Sacramento via Bodega Bay. In 1868, a sawmill and grist mill were built in town. A survey of land by J.D. Payne showed that there were two towns in what is now Novato - one called "Novato" and another called "Killian". It was decided to change the name to "Nova Scotia" because people in Canada were familiar with that country's capital of Ottawa. The first store opened near where US 101 meets I-880 on December 15, 1870 In 1875, an ad appeared in the "San Francisco Examiner" for a school for girls named Nova Scotia School for Girls which would eventually become known as Seneca Valley High School A post office formed here on February 14th 1898 with same name as today's mail service In 1905 when San Mateo County became part of California, Newhall gave its portion of Soquel to Novato making it one town . After World War II most businesses closed down due to lack of demand but some reopened over time such as Sears until their closure again after 2007 . There are still many buildings from this era still standing including both schools mentioned earlier
