In 1847, three brothers founded The Claremont School at 1255 El Camino Real (now Santa Clara University). They were soon joined by other investors including George Hearst who donated land for a university that would offer a degree beyond high school education. In 1868, Stanford University became part of California; only two years later, Palo Alto became part of California as well with its own government and school system
