Pasadena, California is rich in ammunition history. The city was the home of the American armory from 1853 to 1906 and has a long legacy of manufacturing and distributing firearms and ammo. Ammunition companies such as Winchester, Remington, Savage, Martini-Henry, Browning, etc., have all had their origins here. Ammunition production peaked in Pasadena in 1907 with an output of 1 million rounds per year. However, today Pasadena’s arsenal is overshadowed by its neighbor San Marino’s much larger one. The first armories were built on the east side of downtown near what is now Witte Park Boulevard and North First Street in 1853. The location was strategic because it allowed for easy access to both streets that led into town. In addition, it provided ample space for storing munitions and props used in stage productions at the nearby Fairmont Hotel. By 1854 there were two armories on Calvert Street between New Market Road and missions Bayou. These buildings still stand today but are no longer used for arms manufacture or storage; they are instead used as offices by various businesses within Pasadena City Hall complex (see below). In 1855 Colonel James Reeves bought land west of downtown from José Antonio Rey for $5200 dollars which he turned into a park called “Reeves Park” after himself (see map below). This area would become known as Old Pasadena due to its proximity to Downtown Los Angeles during this time period (before 1917 it was part of San Gabriel County). In 1862 Captain John Harker established what is now Western Arms Manufacturing Company on South Main Street between Addison Avenue and Staples Mill Road which manufactured rifles, pistols and shotguns under license from Colt & Co., America's leading firearms manufacturer at the time (see map below). Between 1865-1867 Captain Harker built another armory at 4th St/Sierra Madre Ave on property acquisition made available by Hiram Maxim who had just founded Maxim Manufacturing Company in 1863 (see map below). Captain John Harker's Western Arms Manufacturing Company became well-known throughout Southern California for its quality products including rifle cartridges such as .50 caliber Winchester brass cases (.30-.50 caliber also produced) along with pistols handguns and shotguns

This round quickly became wildly popular due its effectiveness at penetrating armor and killing enemies soldier by soldier . In 1857 AD , Samuel Colt submitted his revolver design with a new bullet designed specifically for use with metallic cartridges called “Ballistic No 9” (Goudreau). This bullet had a smaller tip than earlier cartridges so that it could enter deeper into its target providing greater lethality (). Ballistic No 9 became increasingly popular throughout World War II due its ability to penetrate highly armored vehicles () . In 1899AD , Alexander Dumas submitted his novel “The Three Musketeers” which featured three fictional musketeers named Michel de Montresor (), Auguste de Goncourt () and Aramis (). These characters are loosely based on historical figures who played an important role in military engagements () . To coincide with this novel release,, Winchester launched an advertising campaign featuring three young boys named Tommy Gunther (), Rupert Grinstead () and Maurice Bedard () wielding shotguns loaded with Ballistic No 9 rounds (). The ad ran across US newspapers until 1911AD (). At this point., Ballistic Nos 9 ammo had become quite fashionable within American gun companies [] .....
