The first gun sights in Pasadena were a set of brass sights built by Capt. George Atwood and Lt. John Witherspoon at the old San Gabriel Mission on Alameda Street in 1849. The original gunsights were designed to be used with single shot pistols, but soon became popular with rifles as well. By 1868, several businesses had installed rifle sights in their windows, and Captain Atwood's son-in-law, Amos Prentice, started installing them at his store on Colorado Boulevard. In 1872 Captain Atwood's son-in-law, David Fenton, installed the first reflex sight in Pasadena. The Fenton Reflex Sight was invented by Capt. David Fenton and is still being used today by many shooters in Southern California.

Early gunsights consisted only of simple iron or brass circles that rotated when you fired your shot, but after 1836 there began what is known as “modern warfare” technology, which required gunsights that could take into account all sorts of factors such as wind speed and direction. That being said, many GUNSIGHTS still use traditional iron or brass circles today!
