Pasadena is a city in California, United States. It was incorporated on April 4, 1865, as part of the Pasadena Union School District. The city's population was 113,636 at the 2010 census. The neighborhoods of Pasadena and Los Angeles are adjacent to one another and share a rich history. One of Pasadena's earliest settlers was James K. Polk who purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east of what is now Westwood Boulevard in 1857 for $10 per acre. Polk named his property "Polk Ranch" after President James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Atherton Polk daughter of General Edmund Kirby Atherton III., the father of American president Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1858, John Sibley built the first post office in Pasadena on land he had bought from George Washington Baylor near Temple University campus; Sibley served as postmaster from 1860 until 1862 when he sold the property to Jesse Yee who organized an agricultural society with Wm Harker as its first president and later served as mayor from 1871 to 1879. In 1861, newly appointed US Secretary of War Edwin Stanton ordered Major General Edward Porter to study plans for an army parade through downtown Pasadena on February 14th but Porter found no suitable site within walking distance of both Mexican Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico and Whitehall House where his headquarters were located at that time (the parade would be moved due to protests by local citizens). On March 12th 1861, General Porter ordered Captain George Armstrong Custer commanding 1st Cavalry Regiment during their march down Pennsylvania Avenue towards Gettysburg to participate in America's "Manifest Destiny" policy declaration which declared all Native Americans living westward must be subdued or driven out according to Congressional mandate delivered by then-Senator Abraham Lincoln via Executive Order No: 925/1861 entitled Removing any obstacles or impediments on the route leading from Great Lakes region southward into Mexico so that slavery may exist among these people without interference’ according to History Channel documentary film “The Indian Wars – Battlefields & Streets Of America” starring Robert Duvall about this event).
