Pleasant Hill, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 7,604 at the 2010 census. Pleasant Hill is part of the San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pleasant Hill started as a Mormon settlement in 1851 on the edge of what is now known as Fontana and was named after Pleasant Vale, a tract of land that lay to the east of present-day Fontana. In 1860, Brigham Young's first group of Latter-day Saints founded Fort Bridger south of present day Springdale and Pleasant Hills became their new home. The fort served as an outpost for early Utah settlers and also acted as a base for horseback raids into nearby Nevada by Native Americans. In 1868 Joseph Smith married Emma Hale Smith in Palmyra, New York; they moved to Nauvoo, Illinois where they were met with resistance from some LDS members who felt that she wasn't pure enough Christian like he was. After Smith's death in 1844 his wife married John Taylor who had been First Counselor to LDS President James Fenton and finally became president himself after Fenton's death in 1850 due to yellow fever. In 1869 Josephine Oaks (granddaughter of Moroni) visited Nauvoo while on her way back from visiting her father Brigham Young at Winter Quarters west of Salt Lake City when she saw an American flag fly over Liberty Jail outside the city limits which deeply affected her because she knew her ancestor Mormon Prophet Alma had been imprisoned there during the late 19th century wagon train siege.
