San Buenaventura Ventura is a town in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 21,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The name "San Buenaventura" means "happy village". The first Europeans to visit this area were exploring the San Gabriel Valley in 1821 and named it after Saint Augustine of Hippo's monastery on an island in Lake Buena Vista. In 1848, General Antonio Lilliau arrived here with his army from Mexico City and named the community for General Ventura who had recently been shot by a Mexican colonel during the Mexican-American War. General Lilliau took over command of Ulysses S. Grant's forces besieging Baja California when Grant went on leave and found that he could not get reinforcements to help him against Lilliau's troops because transportation was so limited at that time. On October 5, 1848, General Ventura ordered his soldiers to storm the fortifications at La Mesa and drove out the Mexican garrison which resulted in great rejoicing in San Buenaventura throughout California because it now became an American possession without having to fight for it.
The first Europeans to visit San Buenaventura were the Spanish conquistador Agustín de Iturbide in 1536. The town was founded by Mission Santa Ana on October 17, 1821 as part of the Rancho Ventura Mexican land grant. In 1846, during California's Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna set up a military base at San Buenaventura and garrisoned it with his troops. On July 1, 1847, after a months' siege, the Americans took possession of San Buenaventura and made it their new capital. The town was renamed Los Angeles on November 4, 1847.
