San Buenaventura Ventura, California is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 108,898 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Ventura County and the third-largest city in Los Angeles County. The name of the city comes from Spanish: San Buenaventura meaning "holy place" or "sanctuary." The town had been founded by Catholic missionaries on land that once belonged to Mission Santa Paula. The first European to visit San Buenaventura was Junípero Serra on October 20, 1769. He named it Villa de los Olivos after his home village of Olivas de la Vega just west of Madrid, Spain. In 1824, José Joaquín Tarraza y Duhalde became governor of California and ordered all missions in Alta California closed except for Mission Santa Barbara which he transferred from mission to secular control with Alcaldía Mayor García Martinez as its titular bishop on September 12, 1825. On March 14, 1828 Manuel Nieto founded Rancho Las Californias (later Rancho Ventura) adjacent to modern-day San Buenaventura on what is now part of Pasadena Avenue near Montrose Boulevard east of Long Beach Boulevard. There were about 100 people living there when Nieto purchased it from Pedro Anza for $1 million in 1833; one source gives an estimate that up to 1/5th of the entire Mexican American population lived within 10 miles (16 km) or so of Los Angeles then as it does now
