San Buenaventura Ventura is a city located in Ventura County, California. It was founded on October 17, 1874 by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The first post office in the city was established in 1875. As of the 2010 census, the population of San Buenaventura Ventura was 97,827. The name "Venta" means "Valley." In 1881, a group of Spanish Americans led by José María de la Garza founded the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores and named their new town after Our Lady of the Valley which they had seen near Santa Paula on their travels through California. The discovery of oil at Los Angeles Basin in 1902 led to an increase in business and development around San Buenaventura Ventura. Businessmen erected hotels, businesses and other structures that can still be seen today including: The Hotel Cecil B. DeMille (now known as American Airlines Center), First National Bank Building (now part of Regency Ballroom hotel), Presbyterian Church (later used as a hospital), and many others. In 1916, Mayor Edwin Sánchez created what is now called Plaza de Armas to honor Mexican veterans who fought for America during World War I and also to promote civic pride within the community. Today's plaza dates back to 1924 when it served as a public square between two previous homes - one owned by Judge Manuel Jiménez and one owned by Mr. Bacallero - both being destroyed during riots following President Woodrow Wilson's visit to Mexico City that year
In 1849, the town of San Buenaventura Ventura was founded by Captain José Gomez de la Vega and his wife Juana. The first post office was established in 1851, and the first store was opened in 1853. In 1860, a sawmill and grist mill were erected in San Buenaventura Ventura. A flour mill was built in 1865, and a cheese factory was established in 1886. A railroad line was laid through San Buenaventura Ventura in 1898, and a bank was founded in 1904. A school District No. 1 (later School District No. 2)was formed in 1907, and an insurance company (San Buenaventura Casualty Company)was organized in 1912. The first automobile dealership opened its doors at the Honda dealership on South First Street on November 15, 1925. The County Water Authority became operational on December 1st of that year with the installation of the first well at Indian Wells Creek reservoir along First Street from Los Angeles Boulevard to Park Avenue West. On December 12th of that year, Prohibition came into effect which caused many businesses to close their doors for fear of being raided by Alcoholic Beverage Control agents
