San Buenaventura Ventura is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name means "New City of God." The first Europeans to visit San Buenaventura were members of the Franciscan Mission Santa Clara de Asis on September 14, 1795. They named it after Saint Barbara, who had been martyred in Spain in 386 AD. The mission was abandoned by 1826 and the land became open space. In 1849, General Manuel Micheltorena built his military camp here and called it Campo Bernardo for Bernardo O'Higgins, the Mexican president who had helped free Mexico from Spanish rule in 1815. This name lasted until 1865 when General James Kumey took over as commander of all U.S.-Mexican forces west of Baja California and changed the name to Campo Victoriano because he thought it would better reflect American notions about bravery and self-reliance under modern conditions than Diego Rivera's more militaristic San Gabriel Rey del Sur which retains its Spanish name to this day (after Don José Rivera y Gasset). On October 15, 1862, during Gold Rush days there was a great fire that destroyed most of downtown San Buenaventura except for one building known as "the White House" which burned down on July 12th 1861 due to an accidental spark while trying to start a charcoal burning stove inside). That building still stands today as a museum piece known as "The White House Museum". A post office was established at San Buenaventura on February 8th 1860 by Captain John Ladd with PO Box 129 as its first address. Within the cathedral are several museums which include the Museo de Arqueología y Etnografía (Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography), Museo del Pueblo (Municipal Museum), and la Casa Blanca (the White House). In 1836, Mexican General Vicente Guerrero acquired vast areas of southern California and parts of Northern Mexico from the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As a result, Ventura County formed part of Mexico City's new province of Santa Fe. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Texas annexation brought new settlers to California and to Ventura County. These settlers were primarily Anglo-Saxon and Protestant but there were also a number of Hispanic immigrants. By 1890, over 60% of all residents in Ventura County were white European Americans and 30% were Latinos.
