The first Europeans to visit San Buenaventura were the Portuguese in 1542. The area was part of Alta California, and it was not until 1821 that Mexico gained independence from Spain. The area became a U.S. territory in 1848 and then Mexican territory in 1853. In 1906, San Buenaventura was incorporated as a city by an act of the Mexican Congress.
