The annexation failed due to opposition from local citizens who claimed that their land was already annexed into Mira Mesa without their consent or knowledge. In 1902-03, Father Fernando Ortiz supervised construction at the completion of a new church on State Street in downtown San Marcos which served as both parish and cathedral until 2003 when it was replaced by Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish Church across Market Street from City Hall which is now home to Holy Name Cathedral also known as “the Main” because most city government services are located there including law enforcement and waste management services
