By 1860 San Marcos had become an important port with goods arriving from all around California and Nevada via shipboat or wagon road before being transported by horseback or burro back east to market in Sacramento or other points along the way. In 1861 General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered Mexico's withdrawing army into Southern California where it skirmished with Ulysses S Grant's forces at Monterey Bay on November 8th resulting in three US dead and ten US wounded including then Lieutenant Colonel James Wolkentin who later served as Regimental Commander for Company F (2nd Battalion) 24th Regiment Arizona Infantry during World War I; parade ground today occupied by UHMWA Coyote Hills Memorial Stadium
