Gun Parts History in San Marcos, California began in 1887 when George A. Smith and his partner, W. H. Fagan, founded the first hardware store in town. The store was located on Market Street and was known as "The Hardware House." In 1902, the Fagan brothers sold their share of the business to Smith and continued to run it alone until 1916 when they merged with local rival Hardware Mart Incorporated (now part of Home Depot) to form Home Hardware Corporation. Home Hardware Corporation manufactured a wide variety of household items including guns, ammunition, rifles and shotguns. At its peak in the early 1990s, Home Hardware Corporation employed more than 1,500 employees at three facilities in San Marcos and surrounding counties. It is now a subsidiary of Lowe's Companies Inc., headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. During World War II, Home Hardware Corp produced munitions for the USAAF under contract from Douglas Aircraft Company. The company also manufactured radios and other electronic equipment for military use during that war. In 1954 HomeHardware Corporation merged with American Tobacco Co., becoming American Tobacco Holdings Incorporated (ATI). ATI operated several manufacturing plants around the country until its sale to RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJT) in 1996 which then merged into Philip Morris USA Inc.. In 1871, following Ulysses S Grant's Executive Order 4408 which ordered all Mexican towns located along the US-Mexico border to become self-governing municipalities, the town of San Marcos petitioned for annexation into the United States. On December 12, 1871, acting on behalf of San Marcos and as part of a larger effort to annex all Mexican towns along US-Mexico borders under Grant's order, President Ulysses S. Grant signed Executive Order 4408 into law and annexed sanmarcos into US territory. As part of their incorporation into American territory, sanmarcos received land grants totaling 2 square miles (5 square kilometers). These grants included portions still extant today in areas such as Coyote Hills Park and University Drive NW near downtownSan Marcos Today much or all of these holdings are owned or managed by either local governments or private interests who have developed them over time including golf courses and shopping malls
