In 1875-76 a fire destroyed most of downtown San Marcos but this did not stop growth as new buildings were built including two churches which remain today landmarks on Main Street. The Gold Rush also brought many immigrants toSan Marcos during that time period such as Irishmen who worked on farms; Italians who ran restaurants; Germans who started breweries; Chinese laborers working on railways; Russians; Greeks; Poles; Mexicans from Guerrero County arriving by boat or train. During World War II many local military personnel served in the Pacific Theater and some lived on Main Street while their units were stationed at Camp Pendleton or elsewhere within California’s Central Coast Air Force Base. In recent years much progress has been made with redevelopment projects such as plans for an economic development zone adjacent to old Naval Shipyards property off US 101A south of town dating back to the 1920s when San Marcos was home to one of America’s largest drydockyards located just east of town along I-5W . Plans are underway for housing developments compatible with surrounding communities including a hospital/health care center/office park/strip mall etc., retail space for local farmers markets etc., riverfront access leading down into DDOT’s long term parking garage currently under construction adjacent to Navy Yard property across US 101A from downtown (Rancho Viejo) constituting yet another example of how comprehensive transformation can occur through creative partnerships among government agencies and private entities
The City of San Marcos was founded in 1847 by José Joaquín Herrera and his wife María de la Rosa. The city was named for San Marcos, a small town in Baja California, Mexico. In 1859 the U.S. military burned the old adobe courthouse to prevent Mexican officials from using it as a base of operations during their war with Texas. The new courthouse was built on the same location and is still in use today.
