Today,San Marcos is known for its golf courses – some of them world-renowned – as well as its abundance of cultural attractions such as art galleries and museums. In 1850, the city of Los Angeles was founded nearby, and San Marcos declined as a commercial center. However, it continued to be a popular stopping place for travelers on their way to or from LA.
