From there it grew rapidly due to trade with nearby towns such as Los Angeles through word-of-mouth or family connections; until railroads brought about industrialization which destroyed much agricultural production in the area during the late 19th century. The City quickly emerged as an important commercial center within southern California due to its location at the mouth of two major rivers: Huachuca Creek on one side and Calafia Creek on the other. This made it an ideal spot for shipping goods that crossed both waterways using ferries or barges. The early businesses thrived thanks to local labor force; women were often responsible for laundry service, bakery work or domestic tasks while men worked at factories in nearby LOS ANGELES or SAN FRANCISCO . By 1900 over 50 businesses operated within downtownSanta BARBARA ; this number increased exponentially during World War I when materials became scarce outside OF THE UNITED STATES With advances in transportation technology came an increase in development opportunities for DowntownSANTA BARBARA . A streetcar line was constructed linking DowntownSANTA BARBARA with Pinoleviaand Morro Bayou via Hollister Road beginning operation on October 15, 1915 . Rail yards were built along Broadwayankled by builders who used local labor to build high quality Railway cars These days you can see evidence of this progress throughout town including remnants from railroad tracks still running down Harbor Drive today! The downtown area was reconstructed following a devastating fire in 1906 that destroyed much of the historic district including most of the civic center and several blocks of downtown business buildings. The rebuilding project cost $35 million and took more than 5 years to complete. Today's downtown is one ofSANTA BARBARA'S most popular destinations for tourists and locals alike because it offers an overview of nearly all significant historical events which took place within its boundaries during its time as a municipality
