In 1821, the Mexican government granted American citizens land in Santa Barbara County. The first people to settle in this area were Mission Indians who arrived in 1827. This area was known as Rancho Cucamonga because it was part of a Rancho San Buenavista grant from Mexico to Englishman José de San Fernando.
