The city of Santa Barbara was founded on September 3, 1836 by Spanish bombers named García de la Hoz and José Joaquín Carrillo. The name was chosen to honor the Virgin Mary, who had blessed the area in 1763. The first permanent residents were Spanish Franciscans. On December 12, 1839, a town petition was presented to the Mexican government requesting that they establish an outpost in what is now Santa Barbara County. A group of American traders bought land in present-daySanta Barbara County on November 16, 1840 and established the first post office there. In 1846–1847 Santa Barbara became part of Mexico as part of its Tejas Province. In 1868–1869 both the United States and Mexico decided to annex California; Santa Barbara county did not join until 1850 due to political wrangling over land ownership within Mexican territory. After annexation, Córdoba became the capital of California and Santa Barbara became one of its largest cities with a population of 25,000 people when it joined the Union on January 1, 1880. In 1915SB merged with neighboring Goleta into one municipality called Goleta/SB (later renamed City of San Simeon). On July 14, 1944 during World War II Japanese planes bombed downtown SB killing five people including two U.S citizens working at a store nearby; this bombing has been cited as one of the most heinous acts against civilians in World War II. SB's largest military installation during World War II was Camp Pendleton which housed 4 naval airfields: Naval Air Station Ventura Harbor (NASV), Naval Air Station El Segundo (NASE), Naval Air Station Miramar (NAMR) and Naval Air Station Oxnard (NAVPO). As well as barracks for hundreds of enlisted personnel from all over Southern California Army National Guard units were located at NASV and NASE while NASMirand NAMR operated as auxiliary airfields providing battle gear storage and fighter training support for Marine Corps squadrons based out East at Pearl Harbor and Saipan Island respectively
