Gunsmiths and traders brought pistols and shotguns to the area, and soon there were several gunsmith shops operating in town. In 1876, a group of businessmen formed the Suisun Rifle and Pistol Club to promote rifle shooting in the city. The club quickly became successful, and by 1880 it had organized a regular rifleshooting competition that attracted top-level shooters from around the United States. In 1892, Mayor George W. Dixon enacted a law regulating handguns in Suisun City. This measure was designed to restrict access to handguns by poor citizens who could not afford them. The law proved effective at curbing crime in the city, but it also caused some violence between pistol owners and handgun opponents.Gunfights between rival gangs continued until 1907 when Mayor Dixon repealed the handgun regulationadeciding that such fights were no longer necessary because guns had replaced fists as Suisun's main form of protection against crime. The prohibition of liquor in 1906 also led to an increase in gun ownership among local businesses. Consequently,gunfights between alcohol-fueled gangs ceased almost immediately; instead, these disputes turned into brawls over control of businesses licensed for sale only beer or wine rather than hard liquor. By 1916, however, violence between gun owners and non-gunowners had become more common again; this time it was focused largely on robberies during night hours when most people were asleep or unavailable to defend themselves against assailants wielding shotguns or pistols

Suisun City is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, in the East Bay of San Francisco. The population was 70,043 at the 2010 census. It is the 8th most populous city in California and the 3rd most populous city in Northern California. The first Europeans to visit Suisun were Juan Bautista de Anza and Gaspar de Portolà who arrived on September 2, 1769. A mission called Mission San José was founded by Franciscan friars on May 15, 1777 and became part of Rancho adobado Mexican land grant given to Don Felipe de Neve by Mexico City governor Diego Rivera. The Englishman Nathaniel Hawthorne visited Suisun during his 1847 travel up the Sacramento River from Stockton to Redding and then downriver to Suisun before returning downstream to Santa Cruz on October 24th. In 1851 United States Army Captain John Cranch discovered oil rigs off Suisun Point about three miles south of town beach which led to development nearshore along what would become known as Hwy 1 (now I-680). In 1882 American Petroleum Company built an oil well at Buena Vista Beach with help from General John Pershing during World War I for use as an artillery range east of Oakland; this well stimulated growth along Buena Vista Boulevard which eventually led to incorporation of that neighborhood into downtown when it formed part of Oakland after merger with Alameda County in 1901. The cornerstone for First Baptist Church was laid there by Reverend James Witherspoon on December 5th, 1886 after Congregationalist ministers had been Regulars at First Presbyterian since 1853. On July 14, 1906 Pacific Gas & Electric built its first transmission line west of San Francisco under contract from Southern Pacific Railroad; this new line connected San Pablo Bay with Los Angeles through Suisun Creek Valley and refinery towns such as Hercules (1910), Northridge (1920), Fremont (1925) and Richmond (1930). In 1868, French Canadian Pierre-Edouard de Rothschild founded a munitions plant in Suisun City with help from his friend James Waddell; it became world famous for making ammunition for America's wars in World War I and World War II. During its heyday as an agricultural center, Suisun City employed up to 125 people per acre (40 ha). Today it is home to just over 20 businesses employing fewer than 50 workers and only 2 full-time police officers. However, many of those businesses are still there thanks to strong community support that includes two unified unions Unite HERE! & Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1021 which have been together since 1974
