In 1849, American surveyor John Sutter discovered gold near Suisun Creek and named the creek after him. A post office called Suisun was established in 1857; it closed in 1912. The Town of Suisun was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1916. On September 11th of that year residents voted to rename themselves after General George Armstrong Custer in honor of his death at Battle of Little Big Horn two years earlier during World War I. In 1937, the city's governing body appointed an official historian to compile a history of the city since its incorporation; this historian is still alive today and continues working on this project. In 1962 voters adopted an ordinance providing for community service programs which continue to be offered by the City government today.
