In 1847, American soldiers under General Zachary Taylor came through this area during his Mexican–American War campaign against Mexico. They discovered that some of this land had been claimed by Mexico before it was purchased by United States citizens in 1846 as part of Rancho San Francisco de Asís grant from Governor Manuel Micheltorena. This grant covered most of Contra Costa County except for a small portion that became parts of Pittsburg and Hercules (now Pleasanton) counties after those areas were organized into Unified School Districts on April 1, 1896).
