Temecula (formerly Rancho Mirage) is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census and 514 at the 2015 estimate. In 1835,Temecula became part of independent California when it was acquired by Governor Manuel Micheltorena from the Mexican government as a result of Mexico's Compromise of 1850 which divided California into two parts along lines of race: white for Californios and black for Mexicans. In 1886, Temecula became known as "the most beautiful place on earth" due to its clear water, white sand beaches, palm trees, citrus groves and bird watching opportunities. At that time it also boasted one of America's first streetcar systems with five stations throughout town including one near the old temecula railroad depot which remains operational today as a museum open to the public called "The Temecula Railway Museum".
