It is located on the Temecula River between Simi Valley and Corona Heights in the San Bernardino Mountains. The area now known as Temecula was first populated by Native American tribes including the Tongva and Chumash people before becoming part of Rancho del Cucamonga Mexican land grant in 1821. The town was founded by Captain John Sutter as "Sutter's Fort" on November 10, 1848 during his attempt to extend California's boundaries southward following his victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Hill. The name changed to Temecula on May 26, 1851 when James Buchanan Polk became President of the United States and announced that California would become a state only if it included all of what is now Temecula Valley. On October 30, 1861, while Californian forces were fighting in southern Riverside County during the Civil War under General Grant against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell ( later Union general), Captains George Ayer and Hiram Jethro Gibbs established a military post called Poston along Ulysses S. Grant Avenue which served as an early warning center for events happening in southern Riverside County such as battles or skirmishes outside of Los Angeles or Beverly Hills proper The community experienced rapid growth after incorporation as a city with its original downtown building constructed in 1901-1902 on Main Street between First Street (later 4th Street) and Highland Avenue which still stands today inside City Hall Complex across from Interstate 15 nears Carefree Open Space Preserve which was completed in 1984 adjacent to City Hall Complex providing public open space within city limits while also accommodating private development including housing developments until 1992 when City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting any new commercial development within city limits except for small business districts annexed into other cities through annexation ordinances And so began one of most successful periods for Temeculas - beginning with its complete prohibition from commercial development followed by a series of annexations that has seen much residential growth northward culminating with its incorporation into neighboring Carson City effective January 1st 2002 . United States Secretary of War James Buchanan sent two brigades under Major General Arthur Atherton overland from Fort Tejon to Temecula Valley in order to restore order and expel the insurgents from Mexico City. Atherton's brigade arrived on July 5, 1848, and found that much of Temecula Valley had already been evacuated because of fears that war would break out between America and Europe over claims to land in Baja California which lay across both countries' borders. Atherton began repairs on some abandoned buildings in town while also searching for insurgents hiding among the civilian population. These efforts ultimately led him to discover one of Santa Anna's plotters – José Gomez – living amongst civilians near Temecula at this time too! After apprehending Gomez, Atherton burned him alive at a nearby farmhouse as punishment for his role in helping sneak insurgent troops into Mexico City during an attempted coup d'état later that year! Aftermath: The Americans left Temecula behind after their failed attempt at restoring stability in Baja California; however, they never forgot about it and made periodic visits throughout their careers until finally leaving full-time when NAFTA was ratified in 1994 One reason why Temecula became so popular among American settlers was its mild climate with plenty of woods and mountains around every corner; furthermore, irrigation systems had been built nearby making farming possible without havingTo go all the way downriver where water was scarce or extremely expensive . Even today many small businesses remain based here including several restaurants which are known for their unique burgers called "temescal twists."

On December 13, 1893, Temecula incorporated as a city under the provisions of the Municipal Code of California. On October 12, 1896, Mayor Lucille Wiegand announced that Temecula would become an International City In 1916-1920 World War I resulted in general strikes throughout North America which left many cities without workers during this time period; however, no such strike happened in Temecula because there were no major garment plants then operating in Southern California On July 5th 1969 more than 100% voter turnout for local elections set new record for attendance rates for any election ever held in Kern County In 1989-1990 temcULa experienced increased crime due to Yakuza Influence; however since then community has worked hard to bring back some sense of peace and order
