Yucaipa, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,059 at the 2010 census. It is located in Fresno County and lies on the eastern border of Yuba County. Yucaipa began as a rancher's station on the banks of the Feather River near modern-day Cottonwood Heights. In 1856, Yucaipa post office was founded; it continued to serve until 1912. The town was named after nearby Yuba Creek, which empties into Feather River about southeast of town. Anglo settlers arrived in 1858 and soon started trading with other parts of California. By 1860, most residents were Californios and had Spanish surnames such as Valdez or Pacheco. A few English speakers also lived there until around 1870s when they left for more fertile soil elsewhere in California or found new homes in Nevada. The first school in Yucaipa opened in 1865; it served grades one through four until 1915 when it became part of Sierra Union Elementary School District #2A under then-Superintendent John Waddell (1915-1950). The first post office here reopened on October 25, 1912; it continued to serve until December 1st that year when mail service from Fresno via Southern Pacific Railroad ended due to a fire at Hillcrest Depot east of town which destroyed all but two sidings used by the railroad company for mail deliveries to San Francisco. The ill-fated electrified main line between Sacramento and San Francisco caused great damage during an derailment north of town on November 17th 1911 which resulted in the death of six people including Postmaster Hiram Bingham who was fatally hit by a train while he supervised loaders unloading coal from a locomotive at what is now known as Pioneer Cemetery off Hwy 99 just west of town limits. At least 20 other people were injured when metal plates that held wires leading to power lines came loose and tumbled down over tracks bridge over Feather River below where present day Holcomb Road meets 95th Street NW today causing extensive flooding across much lower sections Plumas Creek etc., making travel dangerous even for locals not familiar with water levels at various places within minutes following impact many lost their homes some 10 miles away from any help available none less than 4 trains passed through this area each day prior to & during event triggering Mudslide occurrence 2 weeks later yucaipa became victimland overnight Nov 22nd 1911 thanks largely to tree/ Wire entanglement 6 dead + 30+injured=100’s homeless by Jan 15th 1912 In 1916 (incidentally about 5 years after passage of Civil Rights Act), African Americans formed their own community called Anacapa Community College Annexes south off Hwy 299 just eastof present day Mendocino Avenue and Highway 99E) using land donated by Mrs Gertrude Morse along side additional acreage donated by several local families raising funds primarily through music concerts given annually at white dances attended by select invite only groups organized & funded mostly by Mrs Morse herself social activities included picnics potluck Dinners Club meetings public lectures forum discussions

The town site was selected by Captain Gabriel Moraga for his mission station, San José de la Boca, on the missions of San Miguel and Concepcion. The town name is derived from a word meaning "Bay of Pines." In 1853, during the time of Joaquin Murrieta's administration as governor of California, Yucaipa became part of founded Murrieta County. In 1865, when the central government was reorganized under Governor John W. Woolley, Yucaipa became part of Placer County. In 1912 Yucaipa had a population of 300 people and it was one of five towns in Placer County that did not participate in county government until 1916 when they were reorganized into Butte County. On July 1, 1916 an act was passed by the state assembly which designated Yucaipa as its capital city with a population of 575 residents. It remained this designation until 1959 when it reverted back to Placer City status following passage by Assembly Bill No. 518 effective September 15th 1959. Yucaipa experienced rapid growth during World War II with an increased population from 2,000 to 10,000 during 1942-1945 alone; however due to World War II efforts (and subsequent censorship) much important community information about local life and events remain largely unavailable today to those unable or unwilling to research such topics for themselves or dig up old records located at various governmental archives throughout Northern California . Only very limited portions or all of what once constituted downtown are still visible today although there are numerous indications that over time some significant demolition and reconstruction took place within what is now known as "the core." In recent years increasing awareness among certain groups (including some members recently constituted within the city's elected body through incorporation) has led notably preservationists (eager to protect both physical evidence associated with past cultural influences and more generally extant vestiges reflecting residential patterns )to effectively advocate for continued use and redevelopment around commercial corridors while also seeking fuller disclosure surrounding any potential negative consequences should such activity succeed in overturning long-held community values
The first permanent European settlement in Yucaipa, California was made by the Spanish in 1769. The area now includes much of the city of Yucaipa and portions of unincorporated County of Fresno. In 1851, a post office was established at Yucaipa. Lorenzo Colonna built a small tannery on what is now State Route 58 near the present day town center in 1861. The following year, he became one of the first farmers to irrigate his land using Moberly Canal water. In 1865, he donated land for a public school and town square near his tannery site. A Presbyterian church was erected in 1870 on part of this property. In 1876, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in nearby Amador County and soon thereafter there were several hydraulic mining operations conducted hereabouts. By 1889,Yucaipa had become an important railroad junction with numerous local goods moving along both railroads and mules overland to & from San Francisco via Progreso & Stockton; thence down the Sacramento River Valley to Stockton via Buena Vista & East Stockton; thence upriver through North Stockton to Yucaipa where passengers disembarked and started their journey back home again that same day or next morning! In 1912-1913 during World War I, war production increased rapidly due to new military technologies being developed at UC Berkeley which included aviation technology including fighter planes and bombers . Due to wartime restrictions on importation of food items into the state, most grocery stores closed up shop in late 1913 or early 1914 as people turned instead to canned goods which were becoming increasingly available from suppliers outside the state because no fresh produce could be grown within California during wartime periods
