Yucaipa is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. It is located on the banks of the Yucaipa River. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Yucaipa was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 7, 1542. A mission was built here in 1821 by Father Francisco Xavier Moraga and named San José de la Merced. A post office called Yucaipa was established in 1836 and served until 1847. In 1850, it became part of Rancho Dos Parejas Mexican land grant. In 1865, George Hearn founded the townsite of Anaheim on the east bank of the river opposite where Yucaipa now stands. He named it after his rancho (land grant) near San Bernardino Heights – "Hearn's Valley". The town site changed hands several times before being acquired by Kern County in 1907 for $10,000 (). A school opened here in 1915 with an enrollment of just 10 students; it closed three years later because of financial difficulties. In 1929, a new high school was built and added to the community when original buildings were destroyed by fire during World War II. It reopened as Northwood High School in 1956 after serving as a junior high school from 1925 to 1957; the old building still serves as a museum today (see photo). In 1958–1959, construction began on what would become known as "the world's first shopping center", anchored by Sears & Roebuck under license from JCPenney Canada Incorporated.; it opened November 12th 1959 and remains open today (now Sears Holdings Corporation). This led to increased business for local businesses including farmers markets and bookstores which continued into the 21st century; see map below for some examples . Yucaipa also hosted two annual rodeos that drew large crowds until they were moved to nearby Murphysboro each year beginning in 1975 due to costs associated with hosting such events numerous times over multiple sites within Kern County...Nowadays only one event per year is held at Yucaipa Racetrack conditioned largely by private donations from individuals who have an interest or experience related to horse racing.. As retail storefronts closed throughout Kern County during the late 20th century due mainly to hostile competition from suburban malls and other development, many residents took up farming or started small businesses around their homes instead...This kept village-like character alive until relatively recently when typical Main Street amenities like stores (of course), churches/synagogues/museums etc., completely disappeared while larger businesses replaced them at every turn." -Yucaipa Village: A Ghost Town?
