The name change came about due to concerns that people living near Salt Lake City were becoming confused with residents of Yucaipa who had not given up their faith and were still following Jesus Christ. The town has experienced rapid growth over the years as it has become known for its wine production, agriculture, shopping opportunities, and schools which have helped make it an important community within Kern County. Today, Yucaipa is home to a diverse population including many high-tech companies as well as some traditional businesses such as farmers markets and small stores. The first permanent white settlement in Yucaipa was made by Captain John Sutter on April 30, 1847. The town was named for José Yúcate, a Mexican trader and war hero who had fought for the United States in the Mexico-American War. In 1853, the California Gold Rush started and created a demand for goods from Yucaipa. The town quickly became known as the "Gateway to the Goldfields." During World War II, Yucaipa played an important role in the military effort against Japan. In 1978, Yucaipa voters approved Measure M which created a city government with its own budget and mayor. In 1984, Proposition 13 gave property owners in Yucaipa exclusive rights to sell their homes without giving anyone else until 2030 to buy them back. This caused many people to leave the town over this issue.
