Yucaipa, California is a small town located on the edge of Yosemite National Park in Tuolumne County, California. The population was 2,844 as of the 2010 census. It is home to two universities and three incorporated villages: North Yucaipa, South Yucaipa, and West Yucaipa. The first Europeans to visit what is now Yucaipa were Spanish Franciscan friars named Manuel García de Almagro and Pedro de Valdivia. They arrived on September 25, 1769, during the Conquest of California. After exploring much of northern California they made their way south through what is now Tuolumne County and came upon an area that would become known as Yosemite National Park. The expedition's captain was José Nieto who named the area San Francisco de los Reyes (St Francis Xavier's Ranch). In 1845 –46 American soldiers under General Stephen Kearny journeyed throughTuolumne County searching for gold but failed to find any deposits worth further exploration. In 1849–50 Emigrant Trails Road was built from federal land at Donner Pass eastward to sell goods necessary for travel overland from Sacramento to Independence pass in wintertime. When First Congregational Church was founded in North Yucaipa by Revd¬erding Dr¬istopher Mather in 1865 it became one of only two churches established within Tuolumne County outside of Yosemite Valley When Ulysses S Grant took office as president on April 15th 1865 he issued an executive order directing all troops west of the Missouri River must leave within 10 days or face military law enforcement action On October 9th 1865 United States Army Sergeant John Berdan killed Californian Chief Sitting Bull at Medicine Lodge Hills near present-day Easton while detachment #3 under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led by Captain Charles Kettering traveled north from Soda Springs toward Goshute Valley across Sierra Nevada . On November 1st 1865 5 men including Sergeant Berdan were tried and found guilty of murder before LtCol Custer’s court-martial In February 1866 General Order No 12 announced that all farmers east of irrigated land had to quit cultivating their land or be taxed into slavery The order also ordered ranchers away from their property using force if necessary Then four months later General Order No 21 changed everything again ordering anyone remaining on their lands “to move out immediately without providing any food or shelter” This order ignited a nationwide cattle drive with up to 50 thousand people departing over several weeks starting February 6th 1766 Some 7 miles eastbound along ranches called Happy Isles run by Philip Hohmann some 9 miles due south along about current day Easton Road ran by John Sutter marked today's boundary between North Yucaipa Village and South Yucca Villagewas also affected
