It was named for José de Yucaipa, an Andalusian general who fought in Mexican War (1846-48), and his father, Manuel Yucaipa. According to legend, when Mission San Francisco de Asistencia arrived in 1769 it found an acacia tree with nuts under it which had been plucked by a vulture! A band of men led by Father Junípero Serra discovered gold near present-day Stockton in 1849 and placer Mining began immediately; however, it did not become profitable until 1858 when two brothers - Isidro and Miguel Lomas - discovered large quantities of gold dust on their rancho called Los Alambres. They quickly organized a company to prospect for gold and soon increased production to over $10 million per year from various operations; this made them wealthy beyond anyone’s dreams before or during the Gold Rush era. In 1886–87 some Potrero Hill developers built what is now known as “The Addition” on Main Street between Sacramento Avenue and High Street; this included a hotel/casino complex with fifteen stories plus an attached garage/warehouse/banking building measuring eighty feet long by thirty wide with walls up to one hundred feet high (the first skyscraper west of St Louis). The property included 1,500 acres (560 hectares) including alluvial fan deposits as well as surface rights dating back to 1800 whereupon they were leased out beginning around 1830 according to current maps drawn up at that timeElihu Root land grant dated December 12th 1847 became available for purchase from Major James Broussard after he drove off Native Americans alleged occupying his Rancho Arenal eastward from Pico Alto into what is now downtown Sacramento . On January 17th 1850 Samuel Morse bought 3200 acres (1125 hectares) just south ofpresent day Yucaipa from Juan Rodríguez y Costilla along with 600 acres (50 hectares) adjacent parcels totaling 6500 acres (2600 hectares), forming what is today known as Morse Ranch subdivisions.. The first European to visit what is now Yucaipa was Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15, 1769, while exploring San Francisco Bay. He named it San José de la Frontera (San José on the other side of the bay). A post office called Yucaipa was established in 1872. The first permanent resident were Mexicans who arrived in 1875 from Baja California. They founded Rancho Seco and later Rancho Encinal y los Nietos (Encinal and Low Lands). In 1886, three brothers, John Sutter, Charles Evans Hughes and William Randolph Hearst purchased Rancho Seco from Mexican owners for $10 per acre ($ in ). They renamed it Yucaipa after their ranch headquarters nearsacramento River. In 1902 an electric railway line was built through town by Southern Pacific Railroad to connect with Stockton and Sacramento; this led to increased trade and development around Yucaipa. The name change back to its original spelling in 1922 when Western Electric Railway assumed operation of the railroad line. During World War II the town prospered as a munitions factory manufacturing military supplies such as aviation gasoline and ammunition; however, following Japan's invasion of Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 production ceased due to war-time restrictions placed upon American companies by Roosevelt administration officials concerned about potential allies becoming Axis powers under Nazi Germany control should hostilities continue unabated Yucaipa re-opened as a small town during postwar years with many businesses existing until they closed because of new economic opportunities available outside of town caused by interstate highway construction that bypassed it . Today there are few if any businesses remaining apart from one restaurant which reopened after being closed for several years prior
