After Custer's death, many local settlers came westward to start new lives where they would grow potatoes and other crops until the late 1800s when oil exploration began in the area adjacent to modern-day Aurora. Arnold Palmer founded Palmer Exploration Company in 1901 which developed some of the first large oil discoveries in western North America including those near Denver and Pueblo City (now Pueblo). By 1907, Palmer had drilled two wells within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Aurora! This led to much speculation about potential industrial development around downtown Aurora but nothing came of it until 1913 when Gifford Pinchot opened up Boulder Canyon West Railroad as an artery for transporting goods from eastern Colorado Springs across Weld County into northern Colorado Springs via what is now I-25/I-70/Ute Road bridge over Cherry Creek Valley east of town limits; creating one of the largest railroad systems ever built! In 1912 Mayor James Fenton announced that he would build a public library if funds could be raised for it by subscription among citizens living within 1 mile (2 km) radius thereof; starting what would become one of Colorado's most lasting civic programs extant today! A grand opening took place on October 15th 1913 with then Municipal President Wm Henson presiding! On December 12th 1915 construction began on Second Avenue between Lawrence & Perry Streets - being completed three years later! That same year saw completion also of First Avenue between Lawrence & Perry Streets - becoming one block wide making it one block south beyond current Main Street boundaries; making downtown Auroratown possible today! In 1917 – 1918 World War I interrupted rail traffic terminating just east off main street 4 blocks north so service resumed just west side 3 blocks south when bridges over Cherry Creek Valley were reconstructed allowing access inland from riverfront parkland more easily
