Castle Rock, Colorado is a small town located in the San Juan County seat of Pueblo. The Spanish built Fort San Miguel on the present-day site of Castle Rock in 1776 during their attempt to gain control of this area from Mexico. The fort fell soon after because of Mexican resistance and was abandoned in 1780. In 1819, Ulysses S Grant became governor of New Mexico Territory following his victory at Battle of Buena Vista against Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. In 1821, he founded Castle Rock about 6 miles (10 kilometers) northeast of Pueblo on both sides of the river. This location made it convenient for Grants’ troops stationed at nearby Fort Washakie along with supplies and shelter from Indian raids farther downriver. CastleRock remained an isolated frontier outpost until after World War II when it began becoming a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty and historical significance as one of only a few places where Americans could battle against Native Americans during that time period.
