In 1850, following gold discoveries at Telluride and Trinidad in southern Colorado, merchants from Pueblo began moving into Commerce City to exploit these new resources. By 1870, mining operations had ceased completely in Commerce City due to over- exploitation by prospectors; however, it remained an important center for transportation because it served as both a terminus for stagecoaches traveling between Denver and Pueblo as well as local farmers bringing their produce upriver to be sold in downtown Pueblo. A hotel was built along Main Street in 1865 which became known as "The Star." In addition to its role as a commercial center during this period, also noteworthy were several industrial accidents which led to increased scrutiny of safety concerns with respect to mines and railways; among these were two derailments within three months of each other which killed twenty-four people including eight miners working on Coal Hill Mine #1 (now Independence Mines). As early as 1893 one merchant complained that "the stores are too heavy," indicative of how much commerce continued unabated despiteewitness reports documenting unsafe conditions at many mines around this time.
