Durango, Colorado is a small town in the San Miguel County region of southern Colorado. The population was 1,533 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern edge of Confluence County on U.S. Routes 12 and 287. Durango lies between Alamosa and Pueblo counties, east of Canon City, and north of Loveland. The name Durango comes from the Churro word "duri" meaning "a soft place to rest." The area around Durango was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century as part of what is now southeastern Colorado. After formal Spanish land grants were made to various ranchers and Mexican occupants during 1821-1827, Englishman Daniel Boone became one of the first white men to set foot in present-day Durango when he came across a mapmarked location on July 10, 1825 while exploring Fort Lyon near Big Sandy on the White River Valley. He named it after his friend Major John Clementson who had helped organize Rocky Mountain Rendezvous which had been established in 1804 as an effort to promote western development along National Road (later US 12). In 1860, durangos emigrated to Juarez County Mexico following their discovery that gold could be mined there on a much larger scale than where they lived back East. For many years they circulated stories about finding vast caches of gold hidden throughout Arizonan Sheep country only accessible by crossing a narrow pass known as La Bolsa (the Silver Nut). By 1870 most had returned home but some 140 continued to prospect forilver near Elephant Butte until 1876 when president Ulysses S Grant granted homesteading privileges to 200 men under agreement that no more than 20% should be women since “the[y] would not contribute anything like their manhood or energy toward making this great [nation] prosperous” (Lemke 914). Hennepin who named it after his home country, Ireland, on July 5th, 1876. The city of Durango was founded in 1887 by members of the Mormon Battalion during their journey from Salt Lake City to Mexico City. When they reached Durango they were met with hostility by local Indigenous people who considered them trespassers and robbers. After a three-year war fought between the Mormons and the Indigenous people, the Mormons retreated to Utah while the Indigenous people continued their raids into Mexican Territory until 1870 when federal troops arrived and quelled their conflict. During its early years as an unincorporated community there were only about 20 residents living in what is now downtown Durango. By 1912 there were over 500 residents living in what is now downtownDurango and beyond including some new neighborhoods Post Office Park (southwest corner of Town Square) and Kimball House which are still active today as educational institutions teaching American Indian history. In 1924 Mayor George Agerheimer spearheaded a campaign to rename all streets within city limits after prominent Americans or pioneers who had made significant contributions towestern Colorado such as Kit Carson, John Muir,and Pio Cortez; this campaign resulted in 40 names being chosen and implemented throughout downtown durango including: Pioneer Plaza (northwest corner of Main Street), California Hall (east side of Capitol Hill), Navajo Hall (southwest corner of Broadway),Henderson House (east side of State Street), Agerheimer House (northwest corner of Main Street), Black Hawk Memorial Garden (northern border near Interstate 25) – all existing facilities that date back more than 100 years!
