Englewood is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,934 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1859 by Carroll Engle and other investors as a railroadtown on the edge of what is now Englewood Lake. The name "Englewood" comes from Englishman John Engle's purchase of land east of Englewood Lake in 1857 for $5 per acre (€3). In 1860, construction began on the first stage of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and soon thereafter the town prospered as businesses opened up to serve travelers coming down the mountain from Denver and Aurora. In 1870, when la montana became a state and Englewood became its capital city after becoming part of Weld County, it only stood as an unincorporated community with a few people living thereabouts until incorporation into the city limits in 1907. Today, Englewood remains an agricultural center with some limited retail space; however it has seen significant development over recent years due to its location within easy commuting distance both toDenver and Aurora and its close proximity to Interstate 25 which makes it serviced by several major employers including PepsiCo and Mastercard.
The Englewood Massacre took place in 1876, when a group of Colorado Mounted Volunteers killed six Native Americans after raiding their camps on the Englewood plateau. The event is also known as the Englewood Massacre of 1876.
