Federal Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Federal Heights" is likely derived from its location on a high bluff overlooking downtown Denver and Aurora. The first homestead in what is now Federal Heights was built by George Washington in 1795. A post office was established at Federal Heights in 1876 and the town got its name from being within 1 mile of both Washington's Mount Vernon estate and Fort Leavenworth Army Barracks on American River. In 1907, Federal Heights became an incorporated town when it was annexed byDenver. Federal Heights had several military installations until 1990 when they were consolidated into the Denver Defense Base area south of I-25 and east of Interstate 70 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 1990. At that time, all active military forces were moved to or within Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Military Park which includes Great Lakes Naval Air Station (Lakewood), El Centro Missile Range (El Paso) and Buckley Air Force Station (Breckenridge). In 2003, federal officials arrived to clean up land adjacent to DMBA where they found evidence that methamphetamine laboratories had been operating for years without detection or law enforcement intervening. As a result of this investigation, 21 people were arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine while also possessing more than one ounce of meth per each individual who participated in the operation across thirteen counties in seven states plus Mexico City; resulting in a total street value exceeding $1 million USD!

The name Federal Heights comes from a treaty between the United States and Mexico that was signed on July 27, 1846. The treaty required Mexico to cede land in southwest Colorado including Federal Heights to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1870, when Colorado became a state, Federal Heights became part of Aurora Township. In 1896 it became its own municipality and has remained that way ever since. Over time, Federal Heights has experienced some significant changes: In 1916, when Congress widened Interstate 25 from twelve miles to thirty-six miles, they decided that Federal Heights should be included within this new highway network – though it had always been an agricultural community with only a handful of businesses scattered throughout its rural area. Today’s busy downtown areas are largely due to recent annexation by Aurora and other nearby municipalities which have seen their populations grow along I-25 corridor! On October 15th 1940 during World War II more than 50 citizens from all overColorado gathered at Municipal Auditorium in Federal Heights for what turned out to be one of the most important patriotic gatherings ever held in this small town! They pledged their allegiance to the US army and raised money for war relief efforts
